Native to Ireland, Dual purpose and like the Irish can be found throughout the world in many countries & continents including Australia, South Africa, Canada, USA and many countries of Europe including the UK.
Now making a come back to Ireland as a beef breed with great taste. Very hardy, easily kept, will thrive outside in Winter and will fatten on grass. Small breed good sucklers with plenty of milk. Not hard on land and will thrive on marginal land.

THE BREED
Dexter Cattle are a small, dual purpose breed native to Ireland. The breed was bred from the Kerry and Mountain cattle by a Mr. Dexter in County Tipperary and was once known as the cottier or (poor mans cow). They were easily kept on the cottiers acre and provided an abundance of rich milk as well as a calf each year. They even grazed the long acres and kept the fences trimmed as they like eating scrub etc.
For this reason Dexter Cattle are used for conservation grazing in the UK and now in parts of Ireland in Kerry mountains and Donegal.
DEXTERs FOR Sale / WANTED
By being a member of the group there is the opportunity to both buy or sell your stock.
Currently there is a demand for breeding stock and for finished steers.
There is also an opportunity on Facebook, but many breeders are using Done deal.
Membership of the ROI Group costs €20. Members have the opportunity of attending area meetings 4 times per year which includes a Farm Walk to a members Dexter Herd. These meetings have proved popular as it is an opportunity to network , buy and sell and to see other herds. Please find an application form on the Website.
