The ROI Group have received the grant offer of €10,000
The ROI Group have received the grant offer of €10,000 from the Dept of Agriculture in order to collect Semen from 5 Dexter Bulls in order to have AI straws available to breeders. This scheme is now underway.
Visit our Facebook page: Irish Dexter Cattle Group.
In 2016 there were154 Dexter Cattle Breeders in the Republic of Ireland registered in the Herd Book. This is an
increase of 24 from 2015. The ROI Group has over 70 paid up members and we are always hoping to increase this number. In the meantime we have set up 3 regional groups. They are: (1) Connaught & Ulster (2) Munster (3) Leinster
We are about to begin year two of the Knowledge Transfer Scheme. This will run for another two years and each member must attend approximately 6 meetings per year, for which they will receive an annual payment of €750. Year one was completed with a modicum of success, although some members found it hard to travel the long distances on very short notice. There are also costs involved, one being the setting up of a Vet plan. The IFA are disputing this at the moment, so maybe it will be a once off payment for the first year only.
ABP/Pallas Foods
The kill date for Dexter Steers this Autumn is 29 th September. The price paid will be €5.50 per Kg for steers under 30 months. They must be Birth Notified with the DCS, be grass fed and from a Quality Assured Herd. Last year both suppliers and Pallas Foods were satisfied with the kill out. But supply is the issue. We have
promised them 100 animals this year and there are only 800+ births per annum at present. All the females are being kept for breeding.
STOP PRESS! Due to a change in date for slaughter, from 20th to 29th September, any animal that reaches 30 months during those 9 days will still be acceptable Members who have steers ready for slaughter should contact their local co-ordinator:
Munster: Tom McDonald – 086 2544655
Leinster: Sean Flannery – 087 2416646
Connaught/Ulster: Oliver Davy – 087 9135510
