Dexter Cattle grazing at Áras an Uachtaráin
Twelve Dexter Cattle were welcomed to the grounds of Áras an Uachtaráin
by President Michael D Higgins in September, delivered by Peter Bryans, of Donabate Dexter Farm as part of a grazing and grassland management plan agreed between the Office of Public Works and the Irish Dexter Cattle Society.
The Dexters will have the pleasure of grazing on green grass and a variety of vegetation on 130 acres of the grounds of the Áras as part of a programme to enhance the biodiversity of the grounds at Áras an Uachtaráin
and it is planned that they will graze these grounds for a number of months each year.
The cattle are a part of the herd of Donabate Dexter in North Co Dublin, and are also involved in a sustainable grazing programme in Fingal County Council’s protected coastal area.
The decision to graze dexter cattle at the Áras was taken following recommendations in a biodiversity audit, commissioned by the Office of Public Works in collaboration with researchers in Trinity College.
